This book of Eleanor Knight’s articles on Bayfield History began as a passionate dream several years ago.
Eleanor Knight left behind five notebooks filled with her fascinating writings about the history of Bayfield. These were stories she had spent endless hours researching and her work is backed up by letters and documents gained through her dedicated effort.
Eleanor’s stories appeared in the local Bayfield County Press newspaper beginning in the early 1950s. This book has been compiled from her original typed copies of those columns. Sometimes she had written a little note to the readers and these comments are also included. The sequence of stories in this book differs from the chronological order of the stories as originally published. All of these newspaper columns are saved in notebooks entitled Bayfield History, Volumes 1- 5. The friendships and times spent working on this book have been rewarding for everyone involved. We came to realize how many other people supported publishing these revealing articles about Bayfield’s history-making pioneers.
The final dream is now that you, the reader, will enjoy Eleanor’s work as much as we have, and that these vignettes may lead to further exploration of the rich history of this community and its early inhabitants.
